May Apply a generous layer of mulch (about 3 to 4 inches) around the base of plants and on top of the soil in garden beds.  This is especially important for moisture-sensitive plants.  Mulch helps to conserve soil moisture, thus reducing the amount of water required.  It also lowers soil temperature and prevents weeds from germinating. Use organic mulches which break down over time and add nutrients to the soil.  Keep mulch several inches away from the stems and trunks of plants.
